Chewelah Facts
Welcome to Chewelah, the town of firsts in Stevens County! We’re not saying we invented everything, but… we were the first to build a Protestant Congregational Church in 1891, the first to open a school in 1869, and the first to welcome the Spokane Falls and Northern Railway in 1889. Oh, and don’t forget the first Catholic church in 1885 and the first county newspaper that hit the stands in July of the same year. But our history goes even deeper—this land is home to the Spokane Tribe, as well as other Indigenous communities like the Colville and Kalispel Tribes, each with rich histories that have shaped this region for centuries. History? Yeah, we’ve got it—and it’s first-class!
