Traditional Tribal Culture

The Spokane Tribe lived as four bands of people; Lower Spokane, Middle Spokane, Upper Spokane along the Spokane River, and the Chewelah Band located in the Chewelah Valley region.
This beautiful mural features tribal gaming and a portrayal of tribal culture and lifeways that remains protected and preserved by the Spokane Tribe. Traditional stick games, horse races, dances and song, gathering with family and friends are all important to the Spokane Tribal culture and traditions.
Gaming has been part of the Spokane Tribal culture for many generations. A traditional stick game highlighted in the painting features men and women gathered, playing a round of stick game and singing the songs handed down from one generation to the next.
Tribal gaming has evolved to a successful modern economic boost for the Spokane Tribe. Revenues generated benefit Spokane Tribal programs and has created much-needed jobs.
